MRFA Condemns Alberta Government’s Use of the Notwithstanding Clause to Force Teachers Back to Work

Calgary, AB — The Mount Royal Faculty Association (MRFA) condemns the Alberta government’s use of the notwithstanding clause to force teachers back to work. This action represents a blatant abuse of power, undermining fundamental constitutional rights, eroding collective bargaining, and attacking the protections guaranteed to workers under Canadian law. “This isn’t just about teachers. It’s about every Albertan’s right to stand up for their freedoms. The MRFA will stand with them.” – MRFA President, Brenda Lang

While the MRFA is not currently in a legal strike position and will not be initiating strike action, we stand in unequivocal solidarity with the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and all workers across Alberta and Canada whose rights are being trampled. MRFA members have committed to actively supporting striking workers, including walking picket lines and participating in solidarity actions.

The use of the notwithstanding clause to override the right to strike sets a dangerous precedent for workers’ freedoms and human rights in this province. It signals a government willing to ignore legal and moral obligations to push its agenda at the expense of those who serve students and communities.

The MRFA will continue to advocate for the protection of workers’ rights and fundamental freedoms, and calls on all Albertans to recognize the threat posed by this government action to the rights of all citizens. Solidarity is essential: an attack on one group of workers is an attack on all.
