2024 Governance Award Recipient – Scott Murray

Dr. Scott Murray received the Governance Award for his outstanding commitment to governance and faculty representation at Mount Royal University over the past two decades. Known for his deep knowledge and active engagement, Dr. Murray has served on the General Faculties Council (GFC) for many years, where he has been a vocal advocate for faculty and student interests. His willingness to question administration and his thorough analysis of policies have led to significant improvements in governance practices. Dr. Murray has also served on the GFC Executive Committee and contributed to shaping the GFC agenda to ensure important topics are addressed. His impact extends beyond GFC; he played a crucial role in establishing MRU’s degree programs, contributed to the design of the Riddell Library, and was instrumental in defining the General Education program. Additionally, Dr. Murray’s leadership on MRFA committees, including the Negotiations and Grievance Committees, has had a lasting impact, notably on contract faculty support. As Department Chair of Humanities, Dr. Murray continues his exemplary service in governance, inspiring and mentoring others to actively engage in MRU’s bicameral governance structure.

Dr. Shane Gannon champions faculty interests and speaks on behalf of faculty voices at all levels of the university. He puts his extensive knowledge of policy to use during the meetings, and supports his colleagues in bringing new ideas forward, encouraging innovations that help existing programs to grow and flourish. As an MRFA Academic Liaison Committee member, Dr. Gannon has brought a keen analytical mind to the many policies that GFC considers. Dr. Gannon has been a strong advocate for GFC’s role in collegial governance and through his large body of work on Curriculum, Dr. Gannon has greatly enhanced the educational experience for students at MRU.
