In Recognition of World Food Day, Members are invited to donate to the SAMRU Food Bank, contribute a food story or recipe, and participate in a potluck on October 16!
World Food Day, recognized globally each year on October 16, raises awareness about issues of food security while celebrating the cultural and social significance of food. It is a day to reflect on how food connects us across cultures and traditions, and to promote actions toward a more equitable food system.
This year, the MRFA invites members to join in a Potluck of International Foods in the Faculty Centre. All attendees are asked to bring a dish that highlights international cuisine: sign up here to participate in the Potluck on October 16! (the dish can be store bought or homemade: see the sign up form for more details on the potluck)
Alongside the potluck, we will be collecting non-perishable food donations in the Faculty Centre throughout September and October in support of the SAMRU Food Bank. Monetary donations can also be provided at the Faculty Centre till in $1 increments (sorry – no charitable tax receipts available).
Members are also encouraged to share a personal food story or recipe, highlighting the cultural or personal significance of food in their lives. Submissions will be collected and shared as part of the event. If we get enough submissions we may even be able to develop an MRFA Members’ Cookbook! (Similar to our collection and sharing of members’ recommended international films for Mother Language Day in February 2025) Join us to share food, culture, and community, while supporting food security for MRU students.
