The Faculty of Teaching and Learning and the Academic Development Centre invite you to attend a Distinguished Speaker Series in Teaching Excellence event.

Visiting Scholar, Douglas College, Vancouver, BC

Session Title:
Considerations for Advancing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
at Mount Royal College

This interactive session will focus on the following:

  • Background to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL):
    what it is, what it isn't, why it matters
  • The Mount Royal context: institutional frameworks and strategies for advancing SOTL
  • Opportunities for enacting SOTL in your classroom
  • Richard A. Gale is currently a Visiting Scholar at Douglas College and Royal Roads University. From 2002-2007 he was a Senior Scholar with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (Stanford CA) where he served as Director of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Richard holds a doctorate in theatre history from the University of Minnesota, a master of fine arts in Playwriting from the University of California San Diego, and a master of arts in drama form San Jose State University. His research and publication portfolio includes work in the areas of aesthetic literacy, assessment in the arts, collective and collaborative inquiry, integrative learning, critical pedagogy, institutional leadership, open knowledge development, pedagogy and theatre of the oppressed, teaching excellence, theatre and national identity, and of course the scholarship of teaching and learning. Most recently Richard was elected to the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education board of directors as the British Columbia representative. He lives in Victoria BC.
