October 1, 2009
Welcome to October. For me, September was a time of focussing on transition issues around the amended Collective Agreement and especially the evolution of tenure processes. The new agreement calls for training for all faculty working on departmental or university-wide Tenure and Promotion Committees, so I've been developing curriculum for those workshops and look forward to the conversations over the coming months as we move the new tenure processes forward. I'm grateful for the cooperation and helpful communication among so many individuals and offices while we've been sorting out the new parallel tenure systems and the assessment of prior experience. For those of us with tenure, it becomes easy to focus on the workload and process implications of all this, but I was reminded by someone today of what a professionally and personally meaningful thing it is to mentor our colleagues and be able to welcome them to tenure at the end of a long formative process. I wish all the best to this year's candidates.
Recognizing that tenure and promotion issues for full-time faculty have taken considerable energy and focus while we shifted the faculty profile to a university model, I'm now looking forward to exploring the issues and concerns facing part-time faculty through the new Task Force that Robin Fisher and will co-chair. With our new MRFA Part-Time Representative, Gerard Lucyshyn in place, and membership on the task force filling out over the next couple of weeks, we'll have a meaningful opportunity to look at the range of factors affecting the careers of part-time faculty at Mount Royal.
Also on the radar this month is the AUCC annual meeting where Mount Royal's membership application will be considered. It's a crucial step in joining the community of Canadian universities.
I keep hearing good things about the quality of our students this year, so I'm hoping classes are settling in well and that the first waves of marking are generally positive experiences.
