February 5, 2008 (re: the Calgary Herald)
Good morning,
Today's Herald is reporting that Advanced Ed Minister Doug Horner has confirmed the government's intention to bring an amendment to the Post-Secondary Learning Act to the Spring Session of the Legislature. The amendment specifically designed to allow Mount Royal to apply for the university name. We have already met the criteria envisioned by the Ministry, so assuming the legislation moves through its various readings, the Mount Royal University name would be conferred by an Order-in-Council from Cabinet. So there are a few procedural steps still to happen, but this is the first public indication from government that they consider it appropriate for Mount Royal to be called a university.
Dave Marshall is holding one of his monthly brown bag sessions with Faculty today at noon in the Lincoln Park Room. This is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions or show appreciation for the incredible political effort it's taken to get to this announcement.
Yay!
David
